Anti-Smoking Measures Get Ridiculous

While Greenpeace, MADD, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest generate national media attention, the real war against choice is being waged under the radar on the local level. A patchwork of local bans, restrictions and taxes enacted by town councils, local school boards, or "concerned citizens groups" is chipping away at freedoms and choice while slowly convincing the public to accept these new restrictions. Here are just a few:
  • Arlington, TX - Setting their sights on the golf course instead of highways, Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants to ban beer at the new Tierra Verde Golf Club. Among those in opposition and defending permission to have a beer on the links is the Arlington Police Association.

  • Draper, UT - In a jolting case of retroactive prohibition, city officials will pull all beer licenses issued this year if a new anti-alcohol initiative passes in November. Among those to be revoked if the ballot passes: the local Ruby Tuesday and the South Mountain Golf Course.
