Perspective: The Nanny Who Cried "Cancer"

If you tried to survive only on the food that has not been proven to cause cancer in rats, you'd probably starve to death.

Recognizing the motivating power of fear, activists have cooked up successful scare campaigns about everything from apples to milk, and there is no sign of them letting up. Despite the fact these fear campaigns are usually based on junk science, they have spawned frivolous lawsuits and crippling labeling requirements, and in some cases brought entire industries to the brink of ruin.

The fear campaigns have also backfired on the nanny culture. Like the boy who cried "wolf," the pseudo-scientists who incessantly cry "cancer" are desensitizing the townspeople to real dangers when they do occur. That shouldn't bother these meddlesome types, though. They seem far too interested in getting headlines to worry about the real damage they may be causing.
