The anti-choice organic lobby will score a significant victory this week when the US Department of Agriculture releases their proposal for the nation’s first official definition of “organic.” In developing the guidelines, the USDA has lumped-together life-saving technology such as meat irradiation with less palatable techniques such as using sewage sludge as fertilizer, giving a boost to the Luddites in the tofu-and-bean-sprouts crowd. The USDA developed these anti-technology standards after receiving 270,000 letters from organic activists protesting the first set of organic guidelines.
