If you thought we were kidding when we said the USDA is making plans to regulate what you eat, here is further proof. Speaking on how a new USDA campaign to cut sugar consumption in the country by 60% will work, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics Eileen Kennedy is quoted as saying, “Many forces, most outside the consumer’s direct control, shape food demand and food consumption.” A Knight Ridder story says Kennedy “went on to say that nutrition is affected by government decisions in agriculture, economics and taxes, and imports and exports. These decisions, she said, have an impact on food production, transportation, processing, marketing, consumer choice, income and education, as well as food palatability and availability.” Certainly sounds like they plan on meddling with our choices… (“USDA looks at limiting U.S. sugar consumption to curb obesity,” Knight Ridder, 3/13/00.)
