As part of fulfilling what Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman says is “the government’s role to guide Americans into adopting a healthier lifestyle,” the USDA has created a new web site to allow people to measure their eating habits against current dietary guidelines. The USDA has already announced a “Behavioral Nutrition Research Initiative” to explore new government solutions to the so-called “obesity epidemic,” including a nutrition intervention program to audit what people choose to eat and help them make “better choices.” Expect more controversial initiatives designed to “guide Americans” to be announced at the USDA’s National Nutrition Summit on May 30-31.
