“Golden Rice” is genetically engineered to deliver vitamin A, a lack of which the World Health Organization says causes about 500,000 children to go blind and 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 to die each year. “There are 3,500 children dying every day. I think we should not delay one day,” says Dr. Ingo Potrykus, commenting on the release of Golden Rice. Nonetheless, anti-choice groups like Greenpeace, Chefs Collaborative, and the Organic Consumers Association continue to oppose genetically engineered food and play a part in preventing the release and widespread use of this life-saving technology.
