Taking Responsibility

Are your kids fat? The Hudson Institute’s Michael Fumento says if they are, it’s not restaurant food, Dream Cast, TV, or computers, to blame–it’s you. The Ottawa Citizen agrees and adds that government “fat taxes” won’t fix the problem. “While government has a role in our mass society in protecting and promoting the health of citizens, it is — and must be — the responsibility of parents to educate themselves to raise healthy children. If mom and dad are good role models in balancing bounty, then the odds are the children will follow their lead. Our community’s health is, mostly, a matter of individual choice.” (“Mutiny over the bounty,” Ottawa Citizen, 12/4/00)
