California lawmakers voted recently to put limits on carbonated beverages and snacks served in public schools. In addition to the preliminary legislation passed last week, another bill is quietly making its way through the state legislative committees: this one would ban any food whose sugar or fat content is above state-imposed limits. How far would this law go? One of its sponsors found he had to write a separate law, just to exempt school bake sales from the draconian snacks-and-desserts ban. Unless this second provision passes, PTA bake sales will essentially become illegal in California.
