Philadelphia’s tabloid paper, the Daily News, hit a new low last week with a feature story that advocated “Surgeon General’s warnings” for milk. Christina Pirello, host of the syndicated public-television program Christina Cooks, writes that “dairy food is instrumental in causing compromised immune function, allergies, brittle bones, obesity and a variety of reproductive disorders.” She goes on to blame milk for heart disease, digestive trouble, breast and prostate cancer, and early puberty. If you’re wondering where she could have gotten such absurd notions, just look at the first Internet link provided with the story. It points to the animal-rights fanatics at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), an organization that has been trying to scare consumers away from meat and dairy for over 15 years. PCRM is largely bankrolled by pass-through foundation grants, which are funded by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
