The director of the World Health Organization, Gro Harlem Brundtland, says genetically improved food products can save lives. “Many poor farmers who hear that GM seeds can increase yields, withstand drought or protect crops from insects, only ask: ‘When can we get our hands on these new varieties?'” Brundtland says that the development of genetically improved crops may drastically reduce Vitamin A and iron deficiencies in the biggest change in food science “since the Green Revolution of the 1960s.” And with “food products such as fruits that contain vaccines against diseases” not far off, “in countries that struggle with low immunization rates, such products may become major lifesavers.”
