Stupidity has been snowballing in the United Kingdom. Yesterday’s absurd report on obesity from the British government’s Foresight program has ignited calls for increasingly draconian controls on the eating habits of the British people. Of note: Health Secretary Alan Johnson’s lofty proclamations from the Parliament floor about the need for a “fundamental shift” in how the government approaches the obesity “problem.” From his statement:
Underpinning all of this is an acknowledgment that Government must do more …
In the past, tackling obesity has always been regarded as a matter of personal willpower but, as this report starkly demonstrates … individual action alone will not be sufficient.
Solutions will not be found in exhortations for greater individual responsibility or in what the Report calls the futility of isolated initiatives.
Here’s hoping Johnson’s hype-fueled heavy-handedness doesn’t cross the Atlantic.
