Have It Your Way

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) hasn’t come right out and said we can’t barbecue hamburgers… yet. But they sure are making it hard for us to enjoy this summer pastime. According to these guys, you’re risking your life every time you roll out the grill.

Serve the hamburgers too rare…
“You shouldn’t have to face a death sentence because you made a mistake in cooking hamburger,” says CSPI’s director of food safety Caroline Smith de Waal.

Serve them too well done…
“Avoid eating blackened or charred food. …Grilling and barbecuing…are more likely to cause [cancer-causing chemicals] than baking or roasting,” CSPI warns in their newsletter. It suggests “tofu or veggie burgers” instead. We’ll pass.
