Washington – Today the Center for Consumer Freedom called on President Barack Obama to personally denounce the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) for its crass use of Sasha and Malia Obama in an ad campaign promoting vegetarianism.
PCRM, despite its medically themed name, is a particularly strident animal rights group — not a mainstream nutrition organization. Founded by a former president of the PETA Foundation, PCRM has collected over $1.3 million from PETA. Two-thirds of its budget, including the budget for the currently controversial ads, comes from the wealthy founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida.
The White House may not find this, by itself, to be immediately objectionable. But PCRM has been intertwined with the most violent radicals the animal rights movement has to offer. This includes a California surgeon who, acting as a PCRM spokesman, has advocated the murder of other doctors to “save” animals from laboratory testing. “For 5 lives, 10 lives, 15 human lives,” he told a Los Angeles convention, “we could save a million, 2 million, 10 million animal lives.”
“President and Mrs. Obama might not mind lending their daughters’ image to more moderate campaigners,” said David Martosko, Director of Research for the Center for Consumer Freedom. “But associating the White House with a violent animal-rights fringe group certainly doesn’t fit the image the Obama’s are trying to cultivate. President Obama should denounce this organization in no uncertain terms and send a message that will reverberate throughout the radical animal rights community.”
