Golden Rice On The Rebound?

Despite predictions of doom and gloom from the likes of Greenpeace and other fear-mongers, Golden Rice – a genetically-improved strain with added vitamin A – is gaining mainstream support. Nobody…

Golden rice under attack

Genetically improved “Golden Rice,” which adds the nutritional benefit of beta carotene (the body turns this into vitamin A), is a perfect example of a biotech product that could show…

Scoldin’ Golden Rice

Two major biotech companies' agreement to give away seeds of nutrient-rich genetically engineered (GE) "golden" rice to needy developing nations is being denounced by British nannies as just "a huge amount of public relations." While the Rockefeller Foundation has long pushed for this humanitarian effort, anti-GE nannies continue to blindly rail against it.

Stuck In Politics

The Sacramento Bee editorializes in support of genetically improved foods, specifically vitamin-A-enhanced "golden rice" which could save one to two million children's lives a year. "The researchers' golden rice is not a Frankenfood. It is a miracle of modern technology. It is those who seek to keep this rice locked away, because it doesn't fit their ideology about the evils of modern science, who are acting like monsters."

For The Children

"Golden Rice" is genetically engineered to deliver vitamin A, a lack of which the World Health Organization says causes about 500,000 children to go blind and 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 to die each year. "There are 3,500 children dying every day. I think we should not delay one day," says Dr. Ingo Potrykus, commenting on the release of Golden Rice. Nonetheless, anti-choice groups like Greenpeace, Chefs Collaborative, and the Organic Consumers Association continue to oppose genetically engineered food and play a part in preventing the release and widespread use of this life-saving technology.

Cooking Up Controversy

In this week's cover story, Time magazine notes that "at least a million children who die every year because they are weakened by vitamin-A deficiency and an additional 350,000 who go blind" could be saved by genetically improved "Golden Rice." Who could be against this life-saving technology? At a recent press conference, Peter Hoffman, incoming chair of Chefs Collaborative, a group of celebrity chefs pushing organic food, argued that there was no use for "Golden Rice."

Misplaced ‘Brain Damage’

An eminently debunkable report from British food nannies claims that new "miracle" crops produced by the "Green Revolution" of the 60s and 70s could lead to future brain damage. Their flimsy "evidence" says there is a lack of minerals and vitamin A in the world's food supply. But their hypothesis ignores recent breakthroughs by biotech researchers who have produced "golden rice" with rich levels of vitamin A, intended to vastly improve the diet of many Third World nations.
