Scout’s Honor

The Arthritis Foundation in Ventura County (CA) recently sponsored a “Bone Builders Day Camp” for girl scouts. described in pre-event publicity as “an educational program designed to teach children about osteoporosis.” While we’re very much in favor of teaching kids the importance of drinking milk for calcium and other nutrients, a Ventura County Star article suggested that much of the agenda was inspired by junk science. The Star article begins: “When 14-year-old Leah Streiter learned that soda pop eats the calcium right out of her bones, she cut back her consumption and started to drink more milk.” This ridiculous point of view is based on the thoroughly debunked findings of Grace Wyshak, whom we nominated for a 2000 Nanny Award for her shoddy research.
