A New York couple is on trial for nearly starving their infant to death by feeding her a vegan diet. It’s bad press for the vegans of the world, so the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) dispatched its chief nutritionist, Amy Lanou, to testify for the prosecution. Her argument: veganism doesn’t kill people; people kill people.
She’s probably right about that. But Lanou complains that the couple was “misguided and did not breastfeed.” Which gives PCRM’s little game away. Human milk is just as non-vegan as cow milk. However, PCRM has never been as concerned about human health as it has been about animal rights. PCRM is a front group for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and endorses mother’s milk, not because it considers breastfeeding any more healthy than cow’s milk, but because it doesn’t involve animals. Unfortunately, the district attorney failed to inquire into Lanou’s real motive when he put her on the stand.
