Anti-agribusiness activists are claiming victory in the pork checkoff battle, but say they’re not going to rest on their laurels: “Family farmers are fighting back against the commodity groups that have sold them out. . . . We took down the NPPC [National Pork Producers Council], and we’re going after their corporate allies next.”
If there’s any doubt as to intentions, as Robert Kennedy, Jr., president of the Water Keeper Alliance, said recently: “We’re starting with hogs. After the hogs, then we are going after the other ones,” referring to the poultry and beef industries. (“Concerns that pork suit may be extended to other areas,” The Des Moines Register, 1/8/01)
