To Connecticut, Texas, and Kentucky, add Tennessee to the list of states deliberating over-the-top legislation to combat childhood obesity. A bill under consideration in both the Tennessee House and Senate would, among other things, prohibit student organizations from selling food during the school day.
Bake sales and Girl Scout cookies would be out, of course. But since there are no exceptions, students wouldn’t even be able to sell vegetables to one another. One wonders what the food nannies at the Center for Science in the Public Interest — which wants a “plant-based diet [to be] the focus of dietary guidance” — thinks about that.
